Tour de France

The tour ended just during my last day in Paris. We got a place at a turning circle, so we could observe the drivers very well. Great atmosphere!

Besides, we visited the modern economic centre LA DEFENSE and got a good look at art of the 20th century in the CENTRE POMPIDOU.

We finished off with Dee Alexander Quartett in a nice jazz club.

Paris marathon

My sightseeing tour began at Notre Dame. A German-speaking guide explained the building more than 2 hours and she told in lively manner stories about figures, e.g., Saint-Denis took his head after decapitation in his hands and walked up to the place where his church is placed today.

Then Olivier showed me his Paris: TULLERIES, OPERA, LES HALLES with FNAG, .... But I also took a look on small castles, inner courtyards, pieces of the town wall which other tourists passed by. Olivier recognized the age of houses at their creation and explained the origin of modern Paris. Super!!!

However, after nearly 12 hours, I nearly couldn´t climb up the stairs to his flat.

Brussels - Paris

There is only a rapide train (Thalys) to Paris and it cost me to 88 €.

Before departure I walked through the centre of Brussels and discovered some nice little spots.

In Paris, Olivier showed me well-known places and the less known side of Montmartre, Mountain (of) Martyr and I got first impressions of Paris at night.

Memories came into my mind from long, long ago.

High up

Yesterday we got twice a good overview. First we climbed in Waterloo 226 steps to see the area of the famous battle.

Afterwards we explored the ATOMIUM which fascinated me from inside and outside. Here we also had a good look at Brussels.

Good thing there is now a centre of the peaceful union of Europe.

Belgium National Day

„You should come to Brussels on the national holiday!“ invited me 2 Couch Surfers.

First they took me over the famous places of interest of the city. I was surprised that Manneken Pis changes clothes. I knew him only from pictures as a naked well figure and had fancied him much bigger. For over 20 years there is also a Janneken Pis.

In memory of the time we spent together in Japan we went to a Japanese restaurant.

Afterwards we visited the national festival in the streets and parks.

„Yes, we just came from the festival!“

When I crept out of my tent in the morning at 7.30 o'clock, my neighbours were sitting on a bench nearby their tent. They just came home.

I was so tired after my first night at the festival that I needed a rest for 2 days on the camp site of Gent. Then I spent again an evening on the festival in a group of CouchSurfers.

The campingsite is nicely organized, with a lake and recreation areas and it is low in price.

You can celebrate festivals in Ghent

I came to Ghent just when there was one of the biggest festivals of the world.

Within 10 days approx. 4000 events take place, almost round-the-clock. Daily approx. 200,000 people come into the town just as many as already live there.

I met some couchsurfers and visited concerts with them unto dawn. I liked most MANFRED MANN'S EARTH.

My sleeping place also very special: the former tax office.
